Janelle Saffin

ALP, 2007–2013

Janelle Saffin represented the northern New South Wales electorate of Page in the House of Representatives for the Australian Labor Party from 2007 to 2013. Prior to entering the federal parliament, Saffin was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1995 to 2003. She then served as Senior Political Adviser to Dr José Ramos-Horta (East Timor).

Saffin was a strong advocate for her electorate and campaigned to improve local health and education services and community infrastructure. She also supported local campaigns against the development of coal seam gas and worked closely with the people of her electorate in times of disaster, including after the 2010–11 floods in Queensland and northern New South Wales. Saffin was passionate about social justice issues. She was a strong supporter of paid parental level and expressed concern about changes to welfare payments for single parents.

Saffin served on many parliamentary committees. She was chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works and the Trade Sub-Committee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade. Saffin also served as Government Whip in the House of Representatives from 2012 to 2013.
