Senator for South Australia
Dana Wortley represented South Australia in the Senate for the Australian Labor Party from 2005 until 2011 and served as Deputy Government Whip in 2008. As a former teacher and member of the Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Committee she called for ‘a strong and well resourced education sector’ and for ‘integrity and fairness’ in the industrial relations system.
With a background in journalism Senator Wortley expressed a strong belief in the freedom of the press and responsible, ethical journalism to inform the Australian public. She was a great supporter of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and pressed for additional funding and its continued independence.
As chair of the Joint Select Committee on Cyber-Safety she was involved in an online survey of more than 33,000 young people on cyber-safety and the pursuit of programs to help protect students from potential online dangers.
Wortley was also concerned about the environment, speaking often about climate change and in support of legislation and programs such as the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, solar rebates and renewable energy.
